How to Manage Push Notifications

Push notifications keep you instantly informed of schedule changes, team messages, and important updates from your athlete's coaches and club. Here's how to set them up and troubleshoot common issues.

Enabling Push Notifications on Your Device

iPhone/iPad (iOS)

  1. Open Settings on your device
  2. Scroll down and tap Rostered
  3. Tap Notifications
  4. Toggle Allow Notifications to ON
  5. Choose your preferred alert style:
    • Lock Screen - Show notifications when phone is locked
    • Notification Center - Show in notification history
    • Banners - Show temporary alerts at the top of screen
  6. Enable Sounds if you want audio alerts
  7. Enable Badges to see red notification count on the app icon

Android

  1. Open Settings on your device
  2. Tap Apps & notifications (or Application Manager)
  3. Find and tap Rostered
  4. Tap Notifications
  5. Toggle Show notifications to ON
  6. Adjust importance level to High for immediate alerts
  7. Enable Sound and Vibration if desired
  8. Allow Lock screen notifications for alerts when phone is locked

Setting Your Notification Preferences in Rostered

Once push notifications are enabled on your device, customize what types of alerts you receive:

  1. Open the Rostered app
  2. Go to SettingsNotification Preferences
  3. Toggle each notification type based on your preferences:

Schedule Notifications

  • Schedule changes - When practice or game times change
  • New events added - When new events are added to the calendar
  • Event reminders - Alerts before events start
  • Weekly schedule digest - Sunday summary of the week ahead

Communication Notifications

  • Team messages - Messages from coaches to your athlete's team
  • Division messages - Announcements to your athlete's age group
  • Club-wide messages - Important updates from club administrators
  • Direct messages - Personal communications from coaches

Activity Notifications

  • RSVP requests - When you need to respond to event attendance
  • RSVP reminders - Follow-up alerts for unanswered RSVPs
  • Poll notifications - When coaches create polls for your input

Troubleshooting Push Notifications

Notifications Not Working At All

Step 1: Check Device Settings

  1. Verify push notifications are enabled for Rostered in your device settings (see steps above)
  2. Check that your device has an active internet connection
  3. Make sure you're running the latest version of the Rostered app
  4. Try restarting the Rostered app

Step 2: Check Rostered Settings

  1. Open Rostered → SettingsNotification Preferences
  2. Make sure the notification types you want are turned ON
  3. Log out and log back in to refresh your notification settings

Step 3: Device Troubleshooting

  • iPhone: Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Rostered and check if Offload App is enabled (turn it OFF)
  • Android: Clear the app cache by going to Settings → Apps → Rostered → Storage → Clear Cache

Getting Too Many Notifications

  1. Open Rostered → SettingsNotification Preferences
  2. Turn OFF notification types you don't need:
    • Consider disabling Event reminders if you already use calendar reminders
    • Turn off Division messages if you only want team-specific communications
    • Disable Weekly digest if you check the schedule regularly

Notifications Delayed or Inconsistent

Common Causes and Solutions:

  • Background app refresh disabled: Enable background refresh for Rostered in your device settings
  • Low power mode: Disable low power mode or add Rostered to battery optimization exclusions
  • Poor connection: Push notifications require internet connectivity - check your wifi/cellular signal
  • Outdated app version: Update to the latest version in your app store

Missing Notifications for Specific Events

  1. Check if the event was added recently (new events may take a few minutes to generate notifications)
  2. Verify your athlete is registered for the team/event in question
  3. Confirm the event has notification settings enabled (coaches control this)
  4. Pull down to refresh your schedule to ensure you have the latest updates

Managing Multiple Athletes

If you have multiple children using Rostered:

  1. You'll receive notifications for all registered athletes by default
  2. Notification messages will specify which athlete the alert concerns
  3. You can't currently filter notifications by individual athlete
  4. Consider using Custom Ringtones (iOS) or Custom Notification Sounds (Android) to distinguish Rostered alerts from other apps

When Notifications Are Sent

Understanding the timing helps you plan your notification preferences:

  • Schedule changes: Immediately when coaches make updates
  • New events: Shortly after coaches add them to the calendar
  • Event reminders: Before event start time
  • RSVP requests: When coaches enable RSVP for an event (may be days/weeks in advance)
  • Messages: Immediately when sent by coaches or administrators
  • Weekly digest: Sent weekly
